My name is Rebecca Kammerer. I am a certified pediatric sleep coach and certified parent coach, as well as a writer, public speaker, and savior of a sleep deprived childhood, devoted to the pursuit of healthy sleep, for all families that work with me. I remember the early days of being a new parent. I would refer to myself as, "The Bear". I could barleyfunction, I looked like a grumpy ole' bear and I would growl at everyone, especially my husband. I recall how I would wake from the (very little) slumber that I did get, feeling angry. I would feel awful. I did not know how I was going to make it through the day. I later learned that sleep deprivation is use as a form of torture. That's when I knew that I needed help getting sleep.
My background of work and study has greatly revolved around children, most importantly caring for children. I studied psychology at SUNY Purchase. I was fortunate enough to be invited to sit-in on the Post Master's Training Program in Parent Education and Parent Guidance at Adelphi University. I am a certified Parent Coach, trained through, the Talaris Institute. I owned my own Family Child Care center and I was a live-in/out nanny for over 14 years. I been in the pediatric sleep business for 6 years and recognize you are searching for answers. I have been personally trained and certified by "The Sleep Lady", Kim West as a Gentle Sleep Coach. I help parents learn how to "Create Healthy Sleep Habits."
Most recently my studies have been based on “maternal depression and sleep training”. What I learned is how the attachment process between the primary caregiver and child, can be negatively affected by using the cry-it-out method of sleep training, as well as how the baby’s brain can be altered due to prolonged bouts of crying. From this, I have created schedules to help with the overall health of a child. I offer Infant Consults for 4-5 month olds and Sleep Coaching services starting around 6 to 9 month olds (with ) and up to around 12 years of age.
I am referred by many pediatricians. What is wonderful about this partnership is, even though many of the practice's go-to form of sleep training is the cry-it-out method, they are still open to the concerns of the parent, when they say that that is not for them. At which point they refer them to me.

Adelphi: The Institute for Parenting’s Post Masters Training Program
in Parent Education and Parent Guidance -2012
I was fortunate enough to be invited to sit-in on this program. It is an intensive year-long training program designed for parent educators and/or clinicians who work with parents. Its goal is to promote a deepened understanding of the theories, values and principles that inform this work. There is a growing body of knowledge supporting the notion that parent guidance and the participation of parents in parent education programs, enhances parent-child interaction leading to healthy development in children in important ways, i.e., social-emotional, cognitive, language, etc. Through the theoretical lenses of attachment, emotional regulation and interpersonal neurobiology- to name a few- participants will build a solid foundation of knowledge about parents and children. Child development will be studied from infancy through adolescence across a variety of domains. Also there will be a focus on the developing parent-child relationship. The inextricable links between each domain will be examined. A seminar on the processes of program delivery and the principles of parent guidance will provide the skills and information for the application of this new knowledge.
Through these ongoing seminars as well as five (5) full-day workshops, participants will study a wide range of information. They will be immersed in a learning process that will focus on the challenges, issues, and dilemmas that shape their work with parents. Participants will learn important concepts in working with developing families, while enhancing their skills to model, teach and reinforce parents’ ability to create the healthiest of environments for their children.

This specialty training is designed to give coaches the knowledge, education and all the tools and resources they need to successfully work with families of babies 4-6 months of age in a safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate manner.
The GSC approach is a gentler alternative for families who emotionally or philosophically resist letting their babies cry it out: for families who tried “Ferber” (controlled crying) and it didn’t work, and for families who let their baby cry-it-out earlier but now find it doesn’t help. It is also for families who believe in co-sleeping but find that their children aren’t really sleeping all that well, even nestled snugly with their parents. Or for families who did co-sleep for a few months to a few years and now want the family bed to revert back to the marital one.
Can you guarantee “no crying” you might ask? No, no one really can. For example, if you as the parent have taught your child that the way to fall asleep is to be held to sleep for all naps, bedtime and wakings and you decide that you want to change this; your child will naturally protest or resist this change. After all, they don’t know why you have changed your approach. If your child is pre-verbal then they will cry. My goal is to have as little crying as possible. I encourage parents to be loving and responsive but to allow the child the room to learn this vital life skill of putting themselves to sleep. The parent responds and stays with their child and offers physical and verbal reassurance without putting the child to sleep. This supports the development of a secure attachment between parent and child.
I will work with you to create an individualized, step-by-step sleep plan that will factor in your parenting philosophy, your child’s age, health and temperament, mother’s well-being and the related family dynamics. And most importantly I will support and coach you through the process from beginning to end- for night sleep and naps!
In 2006, a team from public and private New York State agencies came together to consider how to increase families' ability to nurture positive development in their children, part of the newly created Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems (ECCS) plan. They convened a statewide forum for parenting education providers to present the plan, and the New York State Parenting Education Partnership (NYSPEP) was launched.
